Bagamat ito’y isolated case .. we will see to it that justice will be served.
Police Senior Master Sgt. Jonel Nuezca shot 52-year-old Sonia Rufino and her 25-year-old son Frank Anthony Rufino over an argument, which began because of the victims’ use of “boga,” an improvised noisemaker, and escalated to old issues between the two neighboring families.
Nuezca, who was off-duty at that time, shot the victims twice each in point-blank using a 9 mm service firearm. His 13-year-old daughter was watching the entire time.
“Ang nangyari daw may nagpapaputok ng boga. Pumunta siya (Nuezca) doon, sinita niya, nagkasagutan daw sila ng biktimang lalaki. Nung nagsasagutan sila, inaawat na ng matanda (Sonia), makikita sa viral video and then hanggang humantong sagutan sa anak niya at ‘yung matanda. ‘Yun na ‘yung nag-trigger sa kanya, nawala siya sa pag-iisip,” said Paniqui Police Chief Lt. Col. Noriel Rombao
The 46-year-old Nuezca, who is assigned to the Parañaque City Crime Laboratory and lives in Barangay Cabayaoasan in Paniqui, was immediately transferred to the Paniqui Municipal Police for further investigation.
Apparently, it wasn’t the first time that the two families have clashed. Reportedly, the Rufinos already successfully sued Nuezca in the past because of a land dispute.
“More than a year ago nang magkaroon sila ng away, land dispute, right of way, hanggang kahapon nung pumunta ‘yung pulis dahil sa pagpuputok ng boga, naungkat ulit ‘yung matagal na alitan na,” said Rombao.
After the shooting, Nuezca immediately fled the crime scene, together with his daughter and wife, who also witnessed the entire incident. the police are said to be preparing to file a double murder case against Nuezca.
The indiscriminate firing comes just days after Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Debold Sinas announced that guns of police personnel will not be muzzled or taped for the holiday season. Sinas said he is confident that police personnel are responsible with their use of weapons.
“May self-restraint at disiplina na ang karamihan sa amin,” said Sinas.
PNP Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana, meanwhile, has condemned Nuezca’s firing.
